iGaming Glossary – A Guide to Important Terms

A

Acquisition
When traffic (potential customers) directed to an online gambling site results in new registrations (leads) and these registered players become first time depositors.

Administration (Back-Office)
The back office or back end system is an important part of casino software solutions and provides the necessary tools, utilities, and services to manage every aspect of an iGaming platform, from payment processing and KYC checks to CRM.

Affiliate Marketing
A type of performance-based advertising in which an operator rewards (usually a cash payment) third-party publishers for referring real money customers to their site.

Aggregator
A company that provides a one-stop software solution that includes thousands of games from a wide range of popular game developers, in a single product.

Anti-money Laundering (AML)
AML refers to laws and regulations designed to prevent money laundering (criminals who disguise illegally obtained funds as legitimate income) and combat the financing of terrorism. As part of an online gambling operation, it is a set of security systems to track suspicious behaviour.

Authentication System
A type of identity verification part of an iGaming operation’s security systems, responsible for identifying a player based on their username and password.

B

Baccarat
A casino card game with several variants, including Punto Banco. The game objective is for players to bet on whether the Player Hand or Dealer Hand will win or tie. The winning hand is the one that achieves a hand that totals the closest to nine points.

Bet Limit
A responsible gambling tool that allows players to set the maximum amount that they can gamble, regardless of the game or outcome.

Bingo
A lotto-based game in which players mark off numbers on a card(s). Online the numbers are randomly drawn by RNG software. The objective is to make a winning pattern. Common online bingo games include 90-Ball, 75-Ball, and 80-Ball bingo.

Blackjack
A casino banked card game, also known as 21, where players compete against the house rather than one another. The objective is to obtain a hand that totals 21 or closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding 21 points (going bust). Popular blackjack variants include American Blackjack, Spanish 21, Free Bet Blackjack, and Blackjack Switch.

Bitcoin Casino
A bitcoin casino refers to an online casino that either only accepts Bitcoin as a payment or a casino that accepts Bitcoin as well as other forms of fiat and/or cryptocurrencies.

Bonus System
Also known as a bonus engine, bonus systems are the different types of promotions and gamification features designed to boost player acquisition and retention. Common promotions a part of a bonus system typically include welcome bonuses, no deposit bonuses, reload bonuses, VIP bonuses, free spins, free bets, cashback, tournaments, missions, etc.

Bonus Expected Value (EV)
This represents the effectiveness of an offered bonus. Based on probability it determines whether the free funds offered by a gambling operator will be more beneficial to the player or the operator.

Bonus Money
The casino’s in-game currency. Bonus money can be awarded to players with or without a deposit for use on real money games. Although bonus money has no monetary value outside of the casino and usually cannot be withdrawn, in certain circumstances bonus funds can be converted into real cash if players fulfill necessary conditions.

Business-to-Business (B2B)
Refers to business that is conducted between companies (e.g. the casino operator and the operator’s platform provider).

Business-to-Consumer (B2C)
Refers to business conducted between a company and an individual consumer (e.g. the casino site and the player).

C

Casino Affiliate Program
This is a type of business that uses a performance-based advertising model (affiliate marketing), to promote casino brands to consumers around the world. The business in charge of the casino affiliate program rewards (usually pays a commission) third-party publishers (affiliates) for generating traffic or leads to the casino site.

Casino Software Game Providers
Casino software game providers are businesses that develop and/or supply RNG casino games software (e.g. slots, table games, video poker, etc.) or live casino game products to iGaming businesses.

Casino Payment Processing
This is the system that gives casinos the ability to securely process monetary transactions, especially those related to credit cards and debit cards. There are three main aspects to casino payment processing: payment processor, payment gateway, and merchant account.

Casino CRM Solution
Customer relationship management (CRM) is software designed to help iGaming businesses manage the contact they have with their customers and track their behaviours to gain valuable information about their preferences. This helps the business to provide a tailored iGaming experience to better suit that individual player’s interest. A casino CRM solution can help a business increase customer satisfaction level and get the most out of player lifetime value.

Casino Supplier
Subcontractor to the online casino and/or gaming operator. For instance, Playtech is an online casino supplier.

Casino Support
The customer service the casino business provides its players should they need assistance or have concerns or complaints that need to be addressed. Common casino support communication channels include live chat, email, telephone, and social media messaging.

Casino Software
The platform a business requires to run an online casino operation. Casino software can include everything from content management systems (CMS) to administration management, payment methods, bonus systems, CRM, games, affiliate solution, and so on.

Casino Front End & Casino Back End
The casino front end and casino back end are the essential and necessary systems required to run an online casino (or any website). The front end is the part of the website that the casino customer sees and interacts with. The back end is the system that runs in the background and is the part of the casino where administration and management tasks are conducted to monitor and manage the business operation.

Cashback Bonus
A bonus that offers players a return (usually up to a certain percentage) on their losses.

Compliance Officer
The person responsible for making sure that all corporate processes and procedures comply with the appropriate laws as well as ensures company operations comply with internal standards.

Craps
A casino dice table game in which players bet on the outcomes of a pair of dice. Players can wager money against each other or against a bank.

Cryptocurrency
A decentralized digital-only currency. Cryptocurrency transactions are verified and recorded via a decentralized system using cryptography instead of by a centralized authority (e.g. bank or government, etc.).

Customer Due Diligence (CDD)
This is a part of the KYC process that evaluates relevant information about a customer or potential customers from a variety of sources to uncover any potential risk of doing business with an individual or company, such as a criminal background, etc.

D

Deposit
Real money funds that a registered player adds to their casino account using one of the available payment methods, with the intention of using that money to gamble.

Deposit Bonus
A type of bonus that is only awarded once a player has made a qualifying deposit.

Deposit Limit
A monetary restriction put into place by the player on their account. A deposit limit is a responsible gambling tool designed to allow a players to set a maximum amount that they can deposit (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) for a desired period of time.

E

Electronic Wallet
A payment method that is used exclusively for making transactions online via a computer or mobile device. Also known as an eWallet or digital wallet, electronic wallet payments are often linked to the user’s bank account and function similarly to a credit card or debit card. Employees Training Programs

eSports
Short for electronic sports, it is organized, multiplayer video game competitions that are typically played between professional players, as individuals or teams, for spectators. Popular eSports include Dota 2, Overwatch, League of Legends, and Fortnite. Placing wagers on these competitions is eSports betting.

Expected Bonus Consumption (E(bc))
It is the money (the expected amount) that a player must wager in order to clear bonus funds from a promotion tied to wagering requirements.

F

Fantasy Sports
A type of online prediction game where a person puts together a virtual team of real sports players and can earn points base on real life statistics that are converted into fantasy points. The better a player performs in real live, the higher the fantasy points a person can get. Participants play against other managers and their teams, with everyone managing a roster by trading, adding, dropping, and selling players in an attempt to keep winning.

First-time Depositors (FTD)
Newly registered players who successfully make their initial real money deposit.

Fixed bonus
The casino pays out a set amount of bonus money to a player as long as the player successfully makes the required qualifying deposit (e.g. Deposit a minimum of $10 get a $20 Bonus).

Free Bets
A type of online sportsbook bonus that is usually awarded with a qualifying bet and is commonly offered to new customers (e.g. Bet $50 Get $100 Free Bet). Free bets can also be offered as money-back specials on specific races (e.g. Money back as a free bet if your horse finishes 2nd by a head or less).

Free spins
A type of bonus (can be given with or without a deposit) for online slot games. G

Gambling addiction
A disorder characterized by the uncontrollable urge to continue gambling despite the negative toll it takes on the person’s life or the lives of others.

Gambling jurisdiction
A country or a region within a country (state, province or city) that offers entrepreneurs licensing services on a legal basis according to the region’s local laws.

Gambling liability
The operator’s responsibility to ensure that the gaming process has been organized fairly according to the local jurisdiction’s standards and regulations.

Gambling license
A certificate of authority issued by a government-authorized gaming control board that permits the license holder to legally conduct gambling activities online (e.g. slots, table games, poker, lotto, bingo, sports betting and any game of chance). Licensees are required to operate their business following the laws and rules of the jurisdiction from which their license was obtained. The requirements to obtain a gambling license and the regulations tied to a license varies from one jurisdiction and gambling authority to the next.

Gambling Operator
The owner of an online gambling site and the person responsible for ensuring their establishment provides players with a secure, fair, and responsible gambling environment.

Gambling Scam
Cheating an online casino for the purpose of receiving a benefit through unfair means that results in extra profit. The most common types of gambling fraud include multi-account fraud, credit card fraud, chargeback fraud

Gambling Software Provider
A B2B (business to business) company that develops and/or supplies a gambling platform, content, and different solutions to entrepreneurs who want to launch their own gambling business or who would like to add additional products, content, or services to their existing brand.

Gambling Web Hosting
This is the physical location of an iGaming business’ website on the internet. Gambling web hosting houses the content that makes up the site and includes various services and solutions designed to ensure a business’ web server can handle bulk traffic, and is fast, stable, and secure.

Game Weight
A type of bonus limit imposed when bets are placed on lower margin games to restrict the operator’s liability.

Gamification
A player retention strategy designed to make the player experience more user-friendly, engaging, and incentivized. Gamification makes the iGaming experience itself more like a traditional video/mobile game, where players can take part in competitions to rank on leaderboards, and/or complete challenges or missions to advance, levels, earn badges, points and/or virtual currency that can be used to purchase items in the casino’s on-site store.

Genuine RTP
A percentage of a payout to players that is based on real results within a certain timeframe.

Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR)
Also called gross gaming yield (GGY) or gross game win, GGR is a key metric used by gambling operators that represents the difference between the amount of money players wager minus the amount that they win, bonuses, and the tax the company pays in relation to gaming supplies.

H

Handle and Hold
Handle is how much money is wagered during a given period of time. Hold is how much money the casino or betting platform actually keeps.

House
The online gambling operator in charge of running the casino or betting platform that provides services to players on the platform.

House Edge (Margin)
The mathematical advantage that a casino has over a player as they play over time.

I

Identity Fraud
When one person steals another person’s financial or personal data to commit a crime or deceive an online gambling business. One of the most common types of identity fraud at iGaming sites is credit card fraud.

J

Jackpot
A large cash prize in a casino game or lottery that is typically the largest single cash prize that can be won.

K

Keno
A lottery-style numbers casino game where player pick between 1 and 20 numbers from a pool of 80 numbers. 20 numbers are then randomly chosen from the pool of 80 numbers. A player wins if one or more of their numbers match the numbers drawn.

Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
A type of performance measurement that is used to evaluate the success of an online gambling business or a particular activity in which it engages over a certain period of time. There are different types of key performance indicators, including money-related KPIs (provides an idea of online casino profit); people-related KPIs (how users interact with the platform); and Hybrid KPIs (links money metrics and indicators related to people).

Know Your Customer (KYC)
A set of standards designed to verify the identity of a customer who opens a real money account with an online gambling business. KYC is a security check meant to protect online casinos from fraud and other criminal activities.

L

Leads
Potential customers who are interested in the offered gambling services and convert from site visitors into registered players.

Licensing Jurisdiction
A geographical area where online gambling businesses can obtain a gaming license from the local licensing authority. Each jurisdiction has its own set of laws and its licenses cover only certain areas.

Live Casino Games
Games that are hosted by human dealers or croupiers in land-based gambling studios and broadcasted in real-time via live streaming webcasting technology to online casinos. Players can take part in these games, betting on their computers or mobile phones and communicating with dealers using the live chat function. Common types of live casino games include live roulette, blackjack, poker, baccarat, and game shows.

Local Jackpot
A local jackpot for a game (or games) for a single operator in one jurisdiction.

Loss Limit
A responsible gambling tool that allows players to set a maximum amount of money that they can lose. Once this limit is reached, the player will not be able to play until after a specified “cool-off” period they’ve set has passed.

Lotto
Also known as a lottery, is a type of gambling activity that involves a player or a machine selecting numbers. A player wins a prize if the numbers they selected are picked in a random drawing. A popular online lotto game is Keno.

Loyalty Rewards
A type of retention program designed to incentivize existing players to continue returning, depositing, and playing at the gaming site. The more they play, the more perks to which they’ll have access (e.g. special bonuses, events, freebies, etc.)

M

Marketing Channels
Different advertising methods used by an iGaming brand to reach, engage, and connect with targeted customers in a specific market. Popular online casino marketing channels include email marketing, social media, blogs, video marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO).

Match Bonus
A type of deposit bonus in which the casino matches a player’s deposit up to a certain amount with bonus funds. For instance, a 100% match bonus up to $100 equally matches the player’s deposit up to $100. If the player deposits $50, the casino awards a $50 bonus.

Merged Bonus
This is when the sum of two or more bonuses that have the same bonus balance type for casino games are added together. The bonus amount and wagering requirement amounts of both new and existing bonuses are combined and the wagering requirement period from the new bonus becomes the wagering requirement period for the merged bonus.

Mobile Platforms
Gambling software, products and/or programs that are compatible with smartphone and tablet devices and can be accessed via these devices through a mobile web browser or dedicated app.

Money laundering
Is an illegal act by which an individual or business that makes money through criminal activities conceals the origins of the illegally obtained funds (“washes the dirty money”) through a legitimate source. In the gambling industry this could either be a disreputable operator laundering the money through the business, or a player that deposits large sums, wagers with that sum without losing too much, and withdrawing the money as winnings.

N

Net Gaming Revenue (NGR)
A representation of the actual profits an online gambling site makes after the total revenue is cleared of expenses. It is commonly used to analyze the profitability of a business. Calculated as player bets minus wins, minus bonus costs, minus regulated market tax.

No Deposit Bonus
A type of bonus that does not require a player to make a real money deposit in order to claim it.

Non-regulated Market
This is a jurisdiction that has no specific online gambling laws in place related to foreign businesses and no licensing authority that regulates online gambling activities offered by these businesses. In unregulated markets, typically offshore online gambling is neither officially banned or legalized as foreign operators are not regulated. Canada and New Zealand are two examples of unregulated markets.

O

Online Casino
An internet-based business the offers games of chance that a person can bet on. Common gambling activities offered at an online casino include slots, table and card games (e.g. roulette, craps, baccarat, blackjack, poker, etc.), video poker, and lotto-based games (e.g. keno, bingo, and instant win games like scratch cards, etc.).

Online Bingo
An internet-based gambling business that typically uses a bingo network and offers a variety of different types of bingo games, dedicated bingo rooms, and bingo tournaments. It is also common for an online bingo platform to offer other games like slots and Slingo.

Online Gambling
Gambling activities that occur on the internet. This includes online casinos, sports betting, poker, bingo, lotto, etc.

Online Lotto
A web-based gambling business that focuses on lottery betting. There are two types of lotto sites. One type functions as a betting site that allows players to bet on the outcome of real-world lotteries, but players do not actually purchase lotto tickets. The second type is an agent site that operates as a private business, serving as the middlemen for real-world lotteries (e.g. PowerBall, MegaMillions, EuroJackpot, etc.) and purchasing actual lottery tickets for these lotteries on the player’s behalf.

Online Poker
A gambling site that offers a variety of poker games and dedicated poker rooms. Poker sites offer various types of poker tournaments, including multi-table tournaments, Sit & Go (SNG) tournaments, freeroll tournaments, and poker satellite tournaments.

Online Sportsbooks
Also known as an online bookmaker or bookie, an online sportsbook is an internet-based business run by a company or an individual that accepts bets on sports, eSports, and other non-sport events from individual sports bettors.

Odds
The return offered by a bookie on a selection to win.

P

Payment Processor
A legal entity (usually a third-party company) an operator appoints to handle the transactions from different payment methods.

Payment Gateway
The solution that connects merchants (the online gambling business) and their customers (players), allowing the business to accept transactions from their customers.

Player
The customer of an online gambling site that engages in the gambling activities offered.

Player Lifetime Value (LTV)
The amount of revenue earned from a single player throughout their lifetime. In other words, the total profit they will generate for an operator from the first time they play on the site until the last.

Poker
The generic name used for a variety of comparing card games that follow similar hand ranking rules in which players wager over which hand is best according to the specific game’s rules. Common variants of poker include Texas Hold’em and Caribbean Stud Poker.

Progressive Jackpot
A jackpot with a sum that continues to grow bigger until it is won. A fixed amount from each wager a player makes goes toward the progressive jackpot. Most progressive jackpots can be found in slot games.

Progressive Slots
Online slot games linked to a pooled progressive jackpot prize. An example of a progressive slot is Mega Moolah from Microgaming.

R

Random Number Generator (RNG)
A computational algorithm that generates a sequence of numbers or symbols entirely at random to ensure a fair outcome for every virtual-based casino game. Slot games are a prime example of casino games that use RNG to determine outcome.

Reality Check
A responsible gambling tool that lets players keep track of how long they’ve been gambling and how much they have won or lost during a playing session.

Refer -a-Friend Bonus
A type of bonus used for both player acquisition and retention purposes. It is awarded to existing players who successfully refer new customers to the site. Usually, the casino or sportsbook offers the existing customer a special benefit (e.g. casino bonus, cash bonus, comp points, etc.) once the friend that has been referred signs up and makes their first deposit.

Regulated Market
A jurisdiction with a local gaming authority that enforces laws and regulations on any business that would like to offer gambling activities and advertise to its residents. Businesses require the appropriate gaming license from the regulatory authority and must comply with the authority’s standards to legally operate in the region. An example of a regulated market is the United Kingdom, which is governed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC).

Reload Bonus
A type of bonus designed for retention purposes to encourage players to return and make a deposit. It may be in the form of a deposit bonus, free spins, match bonus, etc.

Responsible Gambling
A set of social responsibility initiatives created by the gambling industry that requires operators to ensure they are conducting their business with transparency, integrity, and fairness. The intended purpose of responsible gambling measures is to protect minors and customers (especially vulnerable players) from gambling-related harm, as well as providing awareness of these harms, such as gambling addiction.

Responsible Gambling Tools
A part of responsible gambling measures, these can include providing players free access to features and resources that help them to stay in control of their gambling, such as setting limits (max deposit amount, max bet amount, max play time), reality checks, cool off periods, and self-exclusion. As for helpful resources, these can include self-assessment tests and contact information for organizations that can offer professional assistance to those struggling with problem gambling behaviors.

Retention
A business strategy designed to ensure existing players continue to return to engage in real money gambling and increase their play over time. Common strategies used to boost retention include CRM, gamification, ongoing offers, and loyalty and/or VIP programs.

Return to Player (RTP)
Also known as payback and payout, it is the expected average percentage of bets retuned to players from a specific game (e.g. slots, blackjack, poker, roulette, scratch cards, etc.) over the long run. RTP is a theoretical statistical calculation. It is only an average estimation and does not guarantee a precise return.

Revenue Share GGY
The distribution of revenue, the total amount of income generated by players’ losses that is split between stakeholders and other contributors, of which the gambling operator also retains a stake.

Risk Assessment
A process a part of risk management that evaluates an online gambling operator’s exposure to risks such as money laundering, fraud alerts, etc. It consists of three steps, which include risk identification, risk analysis, and risk evaluation.

Risk Management
A process of identifying, assessing, and controlling threats to an operator’s capital and earnings. These threats can include financial uncertainties, technology issues, management errors, legal liabilities, etc. Risk management helps to ensure compliance with licence regulations, helps to reduce the frequency and severity of potential loss activity, and helps to provide a safe work environment for employees.

Roulette
A casino game involving a revolving numbered wheel and matching numbered table. Players bet on which red or black numbered compartment a small ball will land in the revolving wheel. Bets are placed on the corresponding table and all bets are placed against the bank (house). Popular online roulette games include American Roulette, European Roulette, French Roulette, Auto Roulette, and Mini Roulette.

S

Scratch Cards
An instant win lotto-style game that involves a ticket or card covered in an opaque layer that conceals the information underneath. Players scratch off the opaque layer revealing the hidden images, numbers, etc. beneath to see if they’ve won a prize.

Segregated Balance
A bonus engine that allows operators to separate a player’s real money balance from their bonus balance. This makes it easier for the operator to control the release of a player’s real money balance while a bonus is active.

Slots
A gambling game with spinning reels and paylines. The reels feature images (usually complementing the theme of the game) and once spun, will stop at random to determine an outcome. Players win if the outcome matches a winning combination displayed on the game’s paytable. Slots are available in wide range of themes and are usually equipped with a variety of bonus features (e.g. Wilds, Scatters, Free Spins, Respins, Bonus Mini Games, etc.)

Slingo
An online gambling game that combines the elements of slots and bingo. The player’s objective is to complete lines and coveralls on a board that looks like a bingo card, by marking off numbers as these numbers are spun on a set of slot reels. Time Limit
Also known as a play limit, this is a responsible gambling tool that allows players to set a maximum amount of time they can spend gambling per playing session, per day, etc.

Total Win
The amount returned to players during the entire course of playing a specific game.

Transaction Monitoring
An anti-scam system that checks to see if the same player that makes large amounts of deposits is also the player who only gambles a little then tries to withdraw their money. It can help spot suspicious behavior and help in the early detection of money laundering.

Video Poker

Wagering
Risking (betting) a sum of money on an uncertain outcome with the intention of winning money.

Wagering Requirements
Also known as playthrough requirements, it is the number of times a player must wager the bonus amount before they are permitted to withdraw any remaining bonus and/or winnings generated from this bonus.
